     The East Coast Greenway

Some day you will be able to walk or bicycle the entire east coast from Maine to Florida,ME-FL.jpg (58160 bytes) passing through many urban areas. The East Coast Greenway, one of 16 National  Millenium Trails, will cover 2,600 miles. This traffic-free path is now 10 years in the making and 20% complete. By 2010 they hope to have it 80% complete. Visit www.greenway.org for more information.

     Area Trails Keep Growing

Trails often take many years from concept to completion and they get opened one section at a time. Two local examples of this are the Cayuga Waterfront Trail and the Catharine Valley Trail.

The Cayuga Waterfront Trail will be a 6-mile multi-use trail along Cayuga Lake and the Cayuga Inlet in Ithaca. A 2-mile trail loop portion in Cass Park was completed this year. Next year comes the building of a 1.5-mile link from Cass Park to the Farmer's Market. For more information visit
www.cayugawaterfronttrail.com

The Catharine Valley Trail opened a 5-mile segment from Millport (Chemung County) to Montour Falls (Schuyler County) which connects with the 1-mile segment in the village of Montour Falls. When completed this will be a 12-mile trail connecting Mark Twain and Watkins Glen State Parks.

Dream Big, Ride the TransAm in 2004 by the Adventure Cycling Association

Thirty years ago, things were different. Watergate, Sonny and Cher, Billy Jean King, and Elvis on a comeback tour. Right about this time, the TransAmerica Bicycle Trail was being researched and mapped for the 1976 Bikecentennial ride -- our association's very first tour. The idea of riding across the country on a bike and sleeping on the ground was new, strange, and kind of crazy. It was different, and it was fun!

Today not too many people would call crossing the country on a Schwinn Varsity in gym shorts a barrel of monkeys. Even serious touring cyclists might think the idea of sleeping on the ground for 90 days to be noble, but the reality wouldn't be all that much fun, especially on the rainy days.

So, to bring our cross-country adventures a bit more in line with the needs of today's touring cyclists, we have kicked around the idea of adding a few motel overnights. We're going to try out the concept in 2004, starting with the TransAmerica Expedition.

This is how it works. We have increased the price of the TransAm 93-day expedition to $3,600 to pay for about ten nights of indoor accommodations, usually double or group occupancy, in addition to the normal amenities provided, such as the cost of route maps, three group meals daily, camping fees, and other basics. We're planning for these indoor nights to break up the camping routine, facilitate interpersonal communication, and, yes, provide a few special evenings of luxuriating in a bed to enhance comfort. Retaining the essence of the adventure is important to the TransAm experience, and we feel staying in a few motel rooms won't compromise it.

So, if you're ready for the ultimate adventure, join a small group of touring cyclists who will share the challenge and glory of riding our most well-known route -- the TransAm Trail -- and who will come to understand the true beauty of our nation by exploring America on roads you can't see from the freeway.

See details on this trip at http://www.adventurecycling.org/tours/transam.cfm.

     Snowfall on the Appalachian Trail

If you have ever thought of hiking anywhere on the AT in the winter, take a look at this comprehensive map detailing the average annual snowfall. Each map is hand drawn and required 2 years of research for "The Weathercarrot," a 1991 AT thru-hiker to complete.  Note that the files are large and some patience may be required.
