'Twas the night before Christmas on the FLT

'Twas the night before Christmas, away from the house,
The only creature stirring was the outhouse mouse.
The fire crackled and the flames leaped high,
Creating shimmers and shadows for us to dream by.

Rich & Sue were nestled all snug in their sleeping bag,
High in the shelter loft with nary a sag.
Both heads covered in tight fitting caps,
They settled down for a cold evening’s nap,

When out in the woods there arose such a clatter,
They banged their heads, sitting up to see what was the matter.
Away to the ledge they flew like a flash,
To glimpse a deer running the dash.

The sun arose upon new-fallen snow,
So Sue & Rich climbed the ladder to below.
They donned warm layers and slid frozen boots on their toes,
And hiked up the Finger Lakes Trail as flakes wetted their nose.

Sue watched from behind; a red bow in the snow,
As Rich ascended the hill with an outdoors glow.
She heard him exclaim, ere he hiked past the deer,
"Merry Christmas to all, and to all a Happy New Year!"

Guidebook authors Rich & Sue Freeman (www.footprintpress.com) spent Christmas eve, 2003 in Evangeline shelter on the FLT, then hiked the Huckleberry Bog area of Urbana State Forest before heading home Christmas day to see if Santa Clause had left them any presents.

      A New Trail in Brighton

Trail development continues in the Rochester area. Recently a segment of trail 1.5 miles long was opened in Brighton. This trail existed as a segment of the abandoned Lehigh Valley Rail line but until recently it was a muddy mess. Now, graded and covered in crushed stone, it has a new lease on life and is open for visits on foot, by bike or on skis.

The trail runs from the U of R campus – at the south end of Intercampus Drive and south of the U of R parking lots. It runs south, crossing the Erie Canal, I-390, East River Road, and Crittenden Road and ends at Brighton-Henrietta Town Line Road.

These are all lame excuses. Go outside & play. Both Pack, Paddle Ski and Adventure Out offer women-only outings where you can meet other women, have fun outdoors and learn a new skill.

      THE SILVER RIBBON OF DEATH

Yusuf (left) with assistant Mohammed

"My father, along with the elders in town, believe it is impossible to climb to the top of Kilimanjaro. They believe you will die if you go there!” -Yusuf Hemed

The highest vertical rise in the world, gaining over 17,000 feet from the base in the small town of Moshi, Mt Kilimanjaro is capped by glaciers. The local Chagga people have believed for centuries that it was impossible to climb to the top. The silver they saw in the distance was snow, not riches. Legends tell of people who tried to bring down the riches only to find it gone before they could reach home.

Today many people go in search of the ‘riches’ waiting at the top of "Kili." Yusuf Hemed, a 28-year-old Tanzanian guide, brings back photos to show his family. They don't believe him despite the fact he has been to the top over 100 times. Yusuf says, "My father, along with the elders in town, believe it is impossible to climb to the top of Kilimanjaro. They believe you will die if you go there!” His father claims that the photos are part of a government plot to bring tourists to the country of Tanzania in Africa.

For the next two months Yusuf will be visiting the US. His trip is sponsored by Pack Paddle Ski and past climbers. Close to 50 climbers from the Rochester area have been guided to the top of this sleeping volcano.

His stories present a different perspective on world travel, climbing mountains, tourism and life in Tanzania than may be used to. This will be the first time Yusuf has traveled beyond the borders of Tanzania to tell his story of growing up in a country where the average income is less then $500/year. He works for 10 days for what it costs in this country to buy a meal at a good restaurant for one person. For this salary, the lives of over 800 people who have traveled around the world to climb the mountain in his homeland have been in his hands.

There will be several opportunities to hear Yusuf speak about his life at the base and summit of the highest point in Africa. Yusuf is scheduled to speak as follows:
