Monks
and YouTube??
|
|

Walks
into any local grocery store and you can buy Monks' Bread. Now you can buy it
on-line also - the monks, who renounce most worldly things and devote
their lives to the spiritual, have a new web site at www.monksbread.com.
The
Trappist Monks at the Abbey of the Genesee in Livingston County, have earned
their keep for 50 years by baking Monks' Bread. The recipe is the same as it
was 50 years ago. They still use many of the same ovens and making the bread
hasn't changed much--but the marketing has. The web site tells the story
behind the bread and even sports a YouTube video.
Brother
Paul Richards said, “People think Monks' Bread ... is just a gimmick. They
think it's a sales promotion. When they find out monks are really making the
bread, they're surprised. Happily surprised." Three days a week the
monks labor in the bakery. The process begins very early in the morning and
continues along with prayers and other duties. The revenue from the bread
supports the Abby of the Genesee, and helps others. The customers are quite
loyal--sales didn't even drop during the low-carb craze.
Since
the Abbey of the Genesee is in our region, you may be more inclined to pay
them a visit rather than order on-line. Store hours are 8-11 AM, 1:30-3:30
PM and 5:30-6:30 PM Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.
Combine your trip with a
cobblestone tour and you've just created a unique day trip. There's even a
cobblestone building owned by the Abbey of the Genesee.
Tour 7 in Cobblestone
Quest - Road Tours of New York's Historic Buildings takes you past 12
cobblestone buildings in Avon, Lima and Rush. The Hayden House, now owned by
the Abbey of the Genesee, was built around 1840 for Moses Hayden, the first
judge in Livingston County. Four 2-story columns grace the large front
porch. The cobblestones were gathered from neighboring fields.

They're Busy as Beavers at Thousand
Acre Swamp
|

That's an expression of course. There may be beavers in the backwaters at
Thousand Acre
Swamp, but they're not the ones who are so busy. The busy ones are the volunteers who help run and lead hikes and programs throughout the year at this marvelous place in Penfield. What? A thousand acres of swamp doesn't sound marvelous to you? You're wrong - this land owned by the
Nature Conservancy is absolutely marvelous. You can find the marvels by looking down at the flowers and wildlife, or by looking up at the sky.
Here's a sampling of upcoming programs:
Space Trash Over the Swamp
Spring Wildflowers
Sounds of the Night
Perseid Meteor Shower Over the Swamp
Signs of Wildlife
For the complete schedule and all the details, print this PDF file of the 2007 schedule.
If you want to visit the swamp on your own and walk the trails, grab your copy of
"Take A Hike - Family Walks in the Rochester
Area" and flip to page 172. We promise, you won't even get your feet
wet.
