Letchworth State Park - West Side
An easy walking trail for the first two-thirds with a steeper section
in the last third. Nicely shaded making it ideal for a hot summer day.
Good views of the main gorge and that of Silver Lake Outlet from the
spine. Various birds including hawks visible. An interesting foundation
visible on the return loop leading to questions of origin. Easily done
in 1.5 hours.
Barnes Creek Falls
This is nice short walk through the woods and along a gorge that runs
to Canandaigua Lake. It was perfect for an early spring outing. The
trail is very well groomed, wide, and maintained with either rock or
wood chips. There are two very nice overlooks built in to view
waterfalls in the gorge. The park has a small playground and nice
pavilions as well.
Watkins Glen
It's a big park, with paved trails, rangers everywhere and lots of
tourists. It's unbelievably beautiful, though. Best to go on a weekday,
when the crowds are smaller.
This is a stunning hike providing a cardio-workout. The gorge
delivers exquisite beauty from the minute you hit the trail. The 3-mile
in and back is on a civilized rock or concrete surface, but it can be a
bit slippery when it's wet. There's quite a bit of stair climbing, but
there's plenty of lovely resting spots along the way. If you're around
Rainbow Falls in the late afternoon you will likely be rewarded with
numerous bright rainbows - a treat indeed!
Pratt's Falls
I hiked the Gorge Rim (Yellow) Trail with my dog. It's 2.5 miles and
a loop. Great views from this well used trail.
